Discussion Over Tourism in Spain

Latest moves by officials in Spain to shift the profile of visitors have led to criticism.

Spain is aiming to encourage extended visits and leisurely journeys through a recently launched advertising campaign.

The aim is shifting off typical sun-and-sand trips.

When you boil down what they’ve said, we want a new kind of customer – they essentially want rich people.

The executive added that if a prerequisite for booking a trip is wealth, that is "totally unfair".

Demands for Oversight in Tourism

The issues with overtourism in Spain and other places were attributed to "illegal rentals" instead of big operators.

This included demands for governments to regulate instances where property managers do not have a required authorization, health and safety certificate, or proper tax records.

If owners are found to not have the required permits and tax records, fines are imposed. Non-compliance leads to jail time. The entire unauthorized accommodations will vanish quickly.

The takeaway was evident: Hosts should act responsibly, follow the rules, and complete the process.
