Brave Train Staff Member Receives Critical Injuries During Multiple Knife Attack on Express Train
A brave train staff member who stepped in to save travelers during a multiple knife incident on a high-speed train has sustained critical wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.
Details of the Frightening Incident
CCTV video allegedly depicts the employee trying to halt the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities announced a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Emergency Reaction and Aftermath
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been discharged from medical care.
A bystander filmed the suspect waving a big knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the brave employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking law enforcement officer.
Union Response and Calls for Measures
Rail unions were quick to commend staff and call for more action. A union leader stated he would be “requesting immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best possible assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.
A different union representative urged the rail company and government “to move swiftly to examine security, to help the impacted employees, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.
Driver Praised for Quick Thinking
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the emergency services to reach, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost waiting,” stated a union representative.
Additional Information
Authorities stated they received the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer described initially thinking if the event was a holiday prank, but quickly realized from individuals' expressions that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the event was a terror-related attack and have asked the community to come forward with any further details.
Train operations on the affected line are expected to experience disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to defer their journeys where feasible.
