{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel ran across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident happened on the third lap when marshals were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the circumstances
"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA
"During the third lap, marshals were informed and put on alert to enter the track and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a caution signal was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what happened after that point"
