The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence was conducted over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in spring.
